CANDIDATOS Alexander Ekstrom
1.       What position are you running for? Washington State Superior Court  Position 3
1.       Para que posicion se postula? Corte Superior del Estado de Washington, Posicion 3
2.       Why do you think Hispanics should know about the position you are running for? Judges hold a position of public trust and they are public servants.  Judges are required to be knowledgeable, prepared, and apply the law impartially and consistently.  They should never legislate any personal agenda.  A Judge must do this for everyone who appears in Court, and must treat everyone with respect.  It is important that our Judges are committed to these principals.  I am committed to these principals.
3.       Why are you running for this position? I have been a public servant for over 18 years:  I am committed to public service.  My wife of over 20 years and I have lived in the Tri-Cities ever since I graduated from Law School, and we have raised our three children here.  I grew up here, and both my wife and my family have deep roots in Eastern Washington.  I have the experience that matters for the position and I am dedicated to the job.  It is an honor to serve.  I believe that, through my work, I can see that disputes are resolved fairly and that this will make our community better for everyone.
4.       For the Hispanic community, what do you view to be the most important agenda items you will take action on if you get elected? My office is non-partisan and I serve everyone in my community.  An item that should be of concern to everyone, that I have emphasized, and that I will continue to emphasize in my courtroom, is respect.  It includes every aspect of the way the courtroom is run.  It begins at the beginning of a case: by making every effort to pronounce the parties’ names correctly. Particularly for the Hispanic community, it includes the Judge recognizing the importance of both surnames (apellidos) when addressing someone before the Court.  Respect begins with the example set by the Judge, who must be the most respectful person in the courtroom.  It means understanding that a party’s family may be present in the courtroom.  But, ensuring respectful proceedings is not the end of my job.  The proceedings must also be fair: ensuring Due Process of law for everyone – including Latinos.  This includes a courtroom where all monolingual parties have not only access to interpreters, but also feel comfortable actually using interpretation.  This means ensuring that jury selection and trials are fair and free from bias.  No one, including Latinos, should be improperly excluded from participation.
5.       Any additional message you wish to share with the Hispanic Voter? ?  I am confident that, if you review the information about both me and my opponent, you will agree that I am the best qualified candidate to continue to serve our community as Judge.  Please look at my website, alexforjudge.net, and you will see that I am overwhelmingly endorsed by elected officials, civil and criminal attorneys (both prosecution/plaintiff and defense attorneys), law enforcement, and other members of our community.  I hope to count on your vote and support on November 8, 2016.
